A Long Table…Un Lungo Tavolo

It was a full week here in Chianti. On Thursday evening, Greve hosted an annual summer event- a communal dinner served at a long table. It was truly a long table, stretched from one end of the Borgo, a Greve street, to the other. A hundred people sat side by side on wooden benches as they feasted on a dinner prepared by a local restaurant. Kids of all ages were recruited as servers to supplement the adults who balanced five or six plates on their arms as they efficiently served all the guests.

For E20, there was an appetizer (a variety of bruschette) a pasta (the primo) and a secondo of either meat and vegetables or beans and potatoes for the vegetarian option. Vanilla gelato was a perfect sweet ending. Dinner included a bread basket, plenty of water and of course a bottle of Chianti every few places. A refreshing breeze coursed down the Borgo all evening keeping everyone comfortable. Visitors from Ravenna sat on one side of our little group and Grevegiani locals were on the other.

The invitation for the dinner welcomed locals and stranieri (foreigners) and the blend of voices in English, Italian, German and French confirmed this was indeed an evening enjoyed by all.
