Frittelle

Yes, January is cold and damp and rainy but this week I discovered a reason to enjoy this otherwise gloomy season - frittelle! These deep fried balls of dough dusted in sugar are similar to a Dunkin Donut munchkin… but so much better!

There are many variations but here in Chianti most have a creamy, chewy rice center under the sweet, crispy exterior. Each bakery, bar and even the Coop (the ShopRite of Italy) features a platter somewhere front and center with a tempting mound of their offering.

Today I was treated to another iteration - a cream filled frittella. Pam passed around one to each of us after our weekly market day lunch at Casa del Popolo. As I licked the sugar off my sticky fingers I decided I liked those best of all. Just to be sure I bought a few more from the bar (Le Logge in Greve) for an after dinner treat!

A frittelle feast…2 cream filled next to two plain- each one perfectly delicious!
