Road Trip Italian Style
Who doesn’t love a road trip? There’s the anticipation of a little adventure, some pretty scenery or maybe just a change of routine. When cruising down an autostrada in Italy at 130 km/hr (about 80 mph), you get all that and more! You get AutoGrill! AutoGrill has to be one of the best parts of an Italian roadtrip for me!
You first encounter the genius of the design as you hurry to the restrooms. You (and your children) must pass enticing displays of chocolates, toys, games, adult beverages (yes they sell wine and prosecco and lemoncello, etc. on the highway!) as well as other sweet treats before choosing the door for Donne, Uomini or even Doccia (shower).
Back in the main store your choices for lunch or dinner rival those of the “meals to go “ counters at your favorite grocery store. Would you like a panino with classic Italian meats or perhaps a Caprese or grilled vegetable sandwhich? Or are you in the mood for pizza? Do those bakery treats look tempting? The server will happily heat whatever you choose.
If you want something lighter, turn the corner to find freshly made salads. Looking for dinner and you have time to linger? You can select a steak or have the chef whip up a pasta dish, with sides and fresh baked bread waiting on the tray.
I’m told there are AutoGrills in other European countries, too. Wish they’d hop the ocean. What would you rather have on your next roadtrip? McDonalds or a grilled eggplant and mozzerella sandwhich?
