The Vendemmia 2024
“Vendemmia”, the grape harvest, has come and gone in Chianti. Most vines, predominately sangiovese which yield the region’s famed Chainti Classico wine, are now barren, stripped. Their leaves turned from green to gold before they fluttered to the ground.
Barren October vines
Heavy rains through September and into October made this year’s harvest a challenging one. Clusters of unpicked grapes rotting on the vine confirm that fact. Some vineyards cut their losses by leaving “too wet” grapes to rot rather than invest manpower in a poor harvest. It’s humbling to witness this stark reminder of any farmer’s reliance on factors beyond one’s control.
A heartbreaking reminder that Nature rules the Vendemmia
